SDKECA Offers Homeowners Tips on Removing Kitchen Odors

The San Diego Kitchen Exhaust Cleaners Association (SDKECA) may be usually dealing with commercial kitchens but this did not stop them from sharing pro-tips with homeowners. Speaking during a homemaking workshop organized by a popular parenting magazine, SDKECA President Keith Brady shared pro-tips in ensuring that the kitchen smells clean and fresh especially after cooking.

“We are used to dealing with clients that have open kitchens, as some diners find it more appealing because they see the movement in the kitchen and see how the kitchen staff moves and how clean the kitchen is. Unfortunately if the kitchen is not as clean as it should be and the vents and exhaust system of the kitchen is not in top condition the odor inside the restaurant can suffer, and so will the sales,” Brady explains.

“I believe we can share a good amount of knowledge even to homeowners since the principle is nearly the same. The kitchen usually has an open lay out in most modern homes, and they too are outfitted with kitchen range and exhaust systems. So basically the odor extinguishing measures used in commercial kitchens can be used in home kitchens to a lower degree,” Brady added. Brady says one of the best ways to ensure that the kitchen will be free from mal-odors is to use a top quality kitchen range hood and exhaust system. He says homeowners should not scrimp on this because the whole house can be affected by the odor especially for open kitchens and families that love cooking pungent or odorous dishes.

Today’s Homeowner has mentioned tips on how to choose the right range hood for a home kitchen. In their write-up they mentioned specifications and features that every homeowner should consider before making their final purchase decision.

“When shopping for a range hood for your kitchen, it’s important to choose a high quality model. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a range hood for your home: Air Flow: Make sure the vent fan exhausts air to the outside, and moves enough air to remove the excess heat, moisture, and pollutants. Vent fans are rated by the number of cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air they move and should be matched to your stove. As a rule of thumb, the vent fan for a 30” stove should be rated at a minimum of 300 CFMs.”

Apart from using and regularly cleaning a kitchen range hood, the website Kitchn.com also shared valuable tips in removing kitchen mal-odors.

“The best way to avoid odors is to get them outside or otherwise out of the air as quickly as possible. If you have a vent over your stove, use it! Otherwise, an air conditioner or air filter can remove greasy cooking smells from the air. (Remember to change filters regularly.) Even just opening a window helps, especially if you can set up a fan pointing out the window, to push odors outside.”
